Stockport Rapidplay Jan 2019.Congress Report.

The Individual Rapidplay was held at the Guildhall Stockport on 27th January 2019 as part of the 33rd Rapidplay organised by Stockport chess club.

There were 140 players which was a considerable increase on the number last year.

In the Open there were 19 players. First place was shared by Adam Ashton (3Cs) and Joseph Mc Phillips (Bolton) with 5 points. The U180 prize was won by Athar Ansari (Newport) with 3 ½.

Ten of the world's top female chess players will  compete in a new event at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis: The "Cairns Cup" from February 6th to 16th 9 rounds. The tournament is similar to the Sinquefield Cup, but for women.

Greater Manchester U160 team beat Notts U 160 Team 8-7 Last Saturday.

Just a brief report to say that the county U160 team had a very close battle with Notts today, and came out winners by the smallest of ,margins 8 – 7 in a reduced 15 board match.

The teams fought all the way to the wire, winning on board 15 to claim the match with the last game to finish.. a nicely executed endgame by one of our new players, Viktor Nagy. As many teams use the M60 to travel around Manchester to get to the opposition, it is often possible to anticipate when and where heavy traffic will hold teams up if United or City are at home. If we have an away game at Worsley for instance and United are at home we know to allow at least an extra 30 minutes.

To address this we have started adding United’s and City’s home fixtures to our fixture calendar, so captains and players can judge if extra time needs to be allowed. ...
