RIP Dave Monaghan 6 January 1947 - 10 January 2021.

It is very sad to report the death on January 10th of Dave Monaghan, aged 74 and who had been one of the stalwarts of the 3Cs' club since its very early years.

Similar to many of those who work behind the scenes at 3Cs, Dave's connection with the club began when his son Karl started playing chess and then himself took an interest in the game.

Confirmed that the above tournament will be taking place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th January 2021. The event has a player fund of £7,000. Players now confirmed are – GM Michael Adams, GM Luke McShane, GM Gawain Jones, GM David Howell, GM Nicholas Pert, IM Ameet Ghasi, GM Daniel Gormally, GM Mark Hebden, GM Keith Arkell, and GM Glenn Flear.

GM Michael Adams wins the Caplin British Online Chess Championship.

GM Michael Adams wins the Caplin British Online Chess Championship.

It is his 8th national title. The first he won more than 30 years ago, in 1989, when he was just 17. To claim this year's one, England's #1 beat IM Ameet Ghasi in a playoff after both scored 7 out of 9 in the main event.

RIP Neil Pickering.

Neil Pickering who was the Captain of Eccles Chess Club from 1998 - 2013

Neil who captained the 1st team in all leagues became invaluable organising matches. In 2011 Eccles won the Silver Rook for C Division under his captaincy and in 2012 spent a brief season as captain of B Division.

 

He continued to support Eccles Chess Club throughout his 70's and retired in 2013 due to his health.

Teimour Radjabov wins the Online Airthings Masters, the second event of the 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour.

Teimour Radjabov wins the Online Airthings Masters, the second event of the 2021 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour, and gets a place in the Tour Finals to be held in San Francisco in September. The sponsor, Meltwater, was announced on the same day.

 

In the tournament's final, Radjabov defeated Aronian 2½-1½ in the first set and 2-1 in the second.
