Just a brief report to say that the county U160 team had a very close battle with Notts today, and came out winners by the smallest of ,margins 8 – 7 in a reduced 15 board match.
The teams fought all the way to the wire, winning on board 15 to claim the match with the last game to finish.. a nicely executed endgame by one of our new players, Viktor Nagy. He eventually forced a way through on the K-side with his extra pawn. Notts took an early lead, but were pegged back when Francis Moan secured a good win, then Mike Carroll levelled things after a few draws.
Then more draws followed, before Gareth Griffiths and Viktor took us to the slender but well deserved win. Notts managed one other win, but not enough to hold us back.
Well done to the team and thanks to those who helped by standing in at short notice.. We had some late withdrawals due to illness and other problems, which meant we needed to replace 4 of our top 10 boards in the final week. Notts also were blighted by late withdrawals. Thanks also go to Jon, Ian, David Keirman, Daryl & others for the `behind the scenes` support they gave, not least in helping to find late replacements. I`ll send out the detailed score sheet when I have it.. We scored 3 wins and 4 draws on the lower 7 boards.. our top order was also very close...
Meanwhile, we are now through to the National Finals stages, finishing our group as winners, and should play in the National Quarter Finals I`ll confirm the match details when they are available.
Well done team..
